Now Playing: "Beckett in Winter II"

(another shameless plug for my theater company)

Featuring Beckett specialist Jack Halton, BIW is quickly becoming a Bay Area favorite event!

It's that time of year again! Quickly becoming a January staple, we are proud to present three short Beckett plays in workshop format. Opening Thursday, Jan. 10th, and playing Friday-Sat. and then the 17th & 18th (Thurs. & Fri.), "Beckett in Winter II" is an evening that highlights the transcendence of Samuel Beckett's genius and the power of small theatre to move us.

We are proud to present our annual workshop "Beckett in Winter!" Directed by Leah S. Abrams, this short evening of even shorter plays includes Beckett's last play, "What Where" (featuring Jack Halton) and the beautiful "Rockaby" (AJ Davenport), along with our annual presentation of "Ohio Impromptu" (read by Richard Wenzel). This evening of wonderful short plays is both poetic and gripping.

"Ohio Impromptu" and "Rockaby" offer us, in true Beckett form, a glimpse at the precarious nature of life's final moments, of the mind's inner dialogue when facing the shadow of the journey's end. "What Where" takes us on a more sinister trek to our universal fate.

The Custom Made workshop series is a great way to see incredible theatre at amazingly low prices. While we still have to pay royalties for the plays, we keep everything else at a minimum to focus on the power of the word and motion. Tickets are only $15 for the general public, and $10 for students / seniors / theatre bay area members!

The Custom Stage @ Off-Market
965 Mission St. San Francisco (between 5th and 6th; one block from the Metreon and two from BART)

Click http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/25280 to get your tickets now - due to the small number of performances, seating is limited!

For anyone interested in Samuel Beckett's work, or in seeing excellent acting and directing, "Sam I Am" is a must see! In San Francisco through May 20, the production is brought to us from Chicago by PUS (Perfrormers Under Stress). This production truly understands, honors, and gives us Beckett's plays. In my opinion, some of the best realized theatre seen in San Francisco.
(P.S. I have no personal or professional connection with this group. I juast think this is a production not to be missed.)
Sam I Am, An Evening of Short Plays by Samuel Beckett
975Howard / The Garage (San Francisco, CA)
Thursday, May. 3 @ 8:00pm
Friday, May. 4 @ 8:00pm
and 6 more dates.
Tickets $10.00 - $20.00
Contact (415) 948:5637 or pusworks.org

Sam I Am is an evening of short works by dramatist, novelist and poet Samuel Beckett (Endgame, Waiting for Godot). Called "ambitious" and "inspiring" by the Chicago Reader, Sam I Am features Beckett's last prose work, "Stirrings Still," as well as "Rough for Theatre II," "Footfalls," "Play," "Act Without Words I," "Rough for Radio II" and "Eh Joe."

We are proud to present a short of evening of Beckett plays, “Ohio Impromptu”, “Catastrophe”, and “Krapp’s Last Tape”

“Beckett in Winter” is the first of Custom Made’s workshop series, presented in addition to our regular season.

Both “Ohio Impromptu” and “Krapp’s Last Tape” offer us, in true Beckett form, a glimpse at the precarious nature of life’s final moments, of the mind’s inner dialogue when facing the shadow of the journey’s end. In “Catastrophe”, Beckett treats us to a darkly comic take on life in the theatre. San Francisco actors, Jack Halton and Richard Wenzel, and Leah S. Abrams bring extraordinary life to Beckett’s poetry and wit.

This exceptional evening of poetic theatre demonstrates the power of Samuel Beckett’s unique and transcendent vision.

3 by Beckett w/ Bald Soprano

Did anyone make it to this program? Apologies for not posting it here in advance, for any Bey Arrheans who might have gone:

*'Beckett/Ionesco' Off-Market Theater, 965 Mission; 262-0477,
http://www.custommade.org/main.htm
$13-15. Thurs-Sat, 8pm. Through Feb 12.

Screw figuring out the universe; these days it's hard enough just to
rationalize the term "social security." In the first half of this
evening's absurdist drama combo, the Custom Made Theatre Company
tailors Eugene Ionesco's The Bald Soprano to such contemporary
quandaries by moving the 1950s French couples into comfy Mill Valley
digs. The clock still chimes out of order, but in "the suburbs of San
Francisco," the children drink artesian water fresh from the purest
California springs at the table. With facile command of the play's
rapid-fire non sequiturs and tricky wordplay, the Smiths (Eric
O'Kelly and Cassie Powell) and their friends the Martins (Jay Martin
and Sarah Parker Leventer) make this piece shine. The point here
being, insipid liberal platitudes aren't going to get us out of the
mess we're in, but with money one can buy everything. Three Samuel
Beckett shorts fill the last half: Catastrophe, Come and Go, and Ohio
Impromptu. The second piece, so beautifully evocative of our
universal need for comfort, needs no change of setting. When you're
standing at the crossroads of being and nothingness, it helps to
commiserate with these two masters. (Giattina)

Permutations in Watt

What do you think of all the permutation sequences in Watt? There are two I can remember: When he's figuring out how to eat cupcakes (is it cupcakes?) in the park without them being eaten by the dog and runs through every combination of possible sequences of events, some of them utterly ridiculous. Or when the four or so people all look at each other, and you get, A looked at B, C looked at A, etc. through every possible permutation for four pages or so. Haha, I found it: "But when five men look at one another, though in theory only twenty looks are necessary, every man looking four times, yet in practice this number is seldom sufficient, on account of the multitude of looks that go astray. For example..." followed by six pages of fugue on failed looking. I find these sequences to be utterly hilarious. Am I just a masochist?

As I was walking home from Golden Gate park yesterday it started raining really hard. On my way out I noticed a man (old, but of indeterminate age) pushing a wheelchair in which supposedly reclined another elderly person. I'm not sure though, because he/she/it was completely wrapped from head to toe in a blanket. It looked so much like a scene from a Beckett novel or play that I couldn't resist relating it to all (four, is it?) of you. The real story obviously wasn't in what I saw; it was in the interstices, as it were.

OK, this was a strange brainstorm on James Joyce's birthday, but for some reason, I unreservedly love Beckett. He makes me giggle. He's fun to read while tripping. He's seriously nihilistic and perverse, and yet an elegant stylist.

I think my favorite is Endgame, because so much of it makes me bust out laughing--especially the ridiculous story about how Clov came to live with Hamm. And the torso parents in the trashcans.

OK, I'm strange. What's your favorite?
